Children love rainbows (well, so do I!) But for any birthday party under 10 years old, whether girl or boy, you can not go wrong with a rainbow tie-dye cake.
They are quite simple to make with just a touch more dishes to be washed and some bright food colour gels.
Well worth the effort, to hear the ”oohs and ahhhs” as the cake is being cut.
What you need:
- A tasty vanilla cake batter
- Gel colours in purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red
- 6 equal sized bowls
- 6 spoons
- 2, 8″ round tins, lined and sprayed
Step 1. Use this reciperainbow layer buttermilk recipe and divided it between 6 bowls. Colour each of the 6 batters with the gels to get a deep rich colour for the tie-dye effect.
Step 2. Start with a dark colour and pour over the bottom of the tin. You can see here I started with purple.
Next I poured blue batter onto the purple. It does spread out the batter underneath and that is what you are wanting.
Repeat the process with the rest of the colours. The order I did was – green, orange, yellow, red.
Step 3. Bake at 180 degrees celcius for about 40 minutes, checking from 30 minutes, until the cake is baked through and springs back to the touch. .
Step 4. Allow the cakes to come to room temperate and then put in an air-tight container (or cling film) and put in the fridge or freezer overnight.

To frost and decorate, you need:
- Buttercream of choice
- Cake boards, 8″, 12″
- Serrated knife
- Offset spatula
- Fondant
- Gel colours
Step 1. Cut the 2 cakes in half which will equal 4 layers.
Step 2. Put a tablespoon on buttercream on the cake board and ‘stick down’ the first of the 4 layers onto an 8″ cake board.
Step 3. Layer the cakes with a good centimetre of white buttercream in each layer. For the 4th layer, make sure to use the bottom of a cake as the top, as it is nice and flat.
Step 4. Crumb coat the cake. Chill. Then palateknife on more buttercream to completely cover the cake in icing with no cake or crumb showing through.
Step 5. Colour small balls of fondant in the same 6 colours used for the cake. Roll long ‘snake’ fondant shapes and create a fondantt rainbow by forming around a circular object.
Tip: With any leftover fondant, make some extra decorations, like these for around the edge of the cake to finish it off.
Step 6. Transfer the cake onto a 10 inch round cake board, with a tablespoon of buttercream to ‘glue’ the 2 cake boards, to finish decorating.
Step 7. Add your rainbow and balls of fondant as pictured below.
The pièce de résistance was the little Rainbow Dash topper on the cake!
Have a wonderful rainbow filled day!
I’ve been baking since I was 10 or 12 with my mother, who used to make all our birthday cakes. I didn’t realise that this was my passion until years later. I ran a home based business making chocolate and desserts and birthday cakes that was completely word-of-mouth, for many years in Bangalore, India. We moved to Singapore 8 years ago and I finally took the plunge in 2013.
